This is me – today is the first day of my ‘mini break’. I’m taking a month off to prepare for my charity trek – the Inca trail, Peru in just under 4 weeks time… (huge thank you to Emma for looking after everything until I get back!)
No make up, messy hair and the start of a cold sore in a packed car heading to the Pyrenees to walk for 4 days – I cannot wait!
I am so looking forward just to taking some time out to think and reflect. Like many, my life always seems so hectic. A friend of mine used to joke that I don’t leave enough ‘white space’ and that’s certainly true. Trying to juggle running a business, be present as a wife, learning a language, volunteering, training a dog and keeping a house going. Not sure I’m doing some of those particularly well, which is why this time is so important to help me to reflect, re-evaluate and get things back into balance.
Over the coming weeks I’ll share my journey and, where possible, updates on the trail. For now, here is what I have learned so far:
- Taking on a challenge like this requires time, commitment and is really hard – I’m less fit than I would like to be at this point!
- I can manage with much less “stuff” than I pack (still working on that!)
- My life is very out of balance – Im feeling a little overwhelmed and I need to learn to say no, where saying yes means I am sacrificing something which is important to me or my family. (Advice I’ve given to others but haven’t stuck to myself…)
- I love being outdoors, yet spend most of my time indoors!
Before Covid I would never have posted something so personal, airing my imperfect self. But something about that journey has made me realise that being authentic is sooo much better than being perfect. Besides, this is quite cathartic…
I’m a work in progress… stay tuned to see what happens!
I am sure there are many of us who echo your feelings quite closely Sue. There comes a time when we need to do that ‘something’ we have always wanted to and take back some control of our own destiny. Good luck! ( and I will follow your example by doing my own quest)
